The student travel product is part of the study financing. The student* can apply for it simultaneously with the study financing. Only for underage, full-time MBO students in the vocational training program can the student travel product also be applied for without the other components of study financing.
The student travel product is a personalized subscription that can only be loaded onto a personal OV-chipkaart, with which only the student may travel. This OV-chipkaart is strictly personal. The period of validity of the student travel product is laid down in the Wet studiefinanciering 2000. At the end of this validity period, the student must cancel the student travel product himself at a public transport pick-up machine .
Specifications
The student travel product is:
- a nationwide travel product for train, bus, streetcar, subway and water bus that allows students to travel for free or at a discount;
- valid as long as DUO has granted the right to the student travel product (please refer to My DUO);
- Optionally available as a weekly or weekendabonnement;
- a travel product that requires the student to check in and out at the beginning and end of the trip.
Validity
The student travel product is:
- valid on all trains of the train operators in the Netherlands, with the exception of lines on which a different fare applies, such as museum lines and high-speed lines;
- Valid on all regular lines of bus, streetcar, subway and waterbus, excluding the lines of the night network. Valid on most neighborhood buses;
- Not valid in night bus, cab services, event transport, cross-border transport and non regular lines;
- valid only on lines with a different fare if a surcharge is paid. Check the transport company's website for the transport conditions of the respective lines.
Duration
- The period of validity of the right to the student travel product - and thus the student travel product - is laid down in the Wet studiefinanciering 2000. For practical details: see duo.nl;
- The student travel product can be used from the moment the study funding starts. A student can log in to My DUO to see when his or her study funding starts.
The student travel product is a continuous subscription and has no fixed expiration date. At the end of the validity period of the student travel product entitlement, the student must cancel the student travel product at a public transport pick-up machine . This also applies if the travel product has been replaced by a travel facility in the form of cash during the validity period.
Week or Weekendabonnement
With the student travel product weekabonnement A student can:
Free travel:
- from Monday 04:00 a.m. to Saturday 04:00 a.m.
- on Goede Vrijdag
Discounted travel on balance:
- from Saturday 04:00 a.m. to Monday 04:00 a.m.
- on holidays from 4 a.m. to 4 a.m. the next day
- in the summer period from July 16, 04:00 a.m. to August 16, 04:00 a.m.
With the student travel product weekendabonnement a student can:
Free travel:
- from Friday 12:00 to Monday 04:00
- on holidays 4 a.m. to 4 a.m. the next day
- from noon on the Thursday before Goede Vrijdag, the day before Koningsdag, the day before Bevrijdingsdag and the Wednesday before Hemelvaart.
Discounted travel on balance:
- on Mondays from 4 a.m. and on other weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 a.m. the following day
- on Friday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Travel on balance for full fare:
- Tuesday through Friday before 9 a.m.

Holidays
Holidays are: New Year's Day, Goede Vrijdag, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday, Koningsdag, Bevrijdingsdag, Hemelvaartsdag, Whit Sunday and Whit Monday and Christmas Day and Boxing Day. The discount during holidays applies to all public transport in the Netherlands: 40% for train and 34% for streetcar, bus, metro and waterbus.
Travelling with a discount
Up to three people can travel with you on the train at a discount. Discounted travel is available from 9 a.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends.
Week/weekend change
A student can switch his student travel product from a weekend to a weekabonnement and vice versa a maximum of twice per calendar year. Note: it is not possible to switch twice in two months. And no switching can be done from May 1 to August 25.
Purchase
- The student can apply for the student travel product at the same time as the study financing (see duo.nl). Only for underage, full-time MBO students in the vocational training program can the student travel product also be applied for without the other components of study financing.
- To receive the student travel product, the student must use DigiD to enter the card number of his personal OV-chipkaart linking. You can apply for a personal OV-chipkaart via ov-chipkaart.nl.
- To travel with the student travel product, the student must pick-up the student travel product at a pick-up machine.
- In order to make trouble-free use of the student travel product, we advise you not to put any other travel products on your OV-chipkaart with the student travel product. Should you nevertheless choose to combine the student travel product with another travel product, the additional costs (incurred because the student travel product did not work in combination with another travel product) will not be eligible for reimbursement.
Cancel
- A student may terminate their student travel product by stopping it at a pick-up machine. The date the student travel product is cancelled at a pick-up machine is considered the cancellation date.
- The student travel product can be cancelled by the student at any time.
- The period of validity of the student travel product is laid down in the Wet studiefinanciering 2000. If a student is no longer eligible to the student travel product, he must cancel the student travel product no later than the tenth day of the month in which he is no longer entitled to it. From the first day of that month, the student may already no longer travel with the student travel product. If a student uses the student travel product when he is no longer entitled to it, he will receive an ov debtfrom DUO. The ov debt for use in the first month after entitlement to the student travel product has expired is €92.98 per half month. The first half month runs until the fifteenth of the month. For use after that first month, the ov debt is €185.98 per half month.
